short bio
Orchid Orchestra is a Vancouver-based indie pop band blending lush choral harmonies, shimmering synths, and cinematic electronic textures into a bold, emotionally resonant sound. Fronted by therapist and songwriter Rupert Hudson, their music explores vulnerability, self-acceptance, and connection—often leaving audiences both dancing and deeply moved.
Before forming Orchid Orchestra, Hudson worked as a music manager, founded a record label and art collective, and toured internationally with artists, including working on a tour that opened for Chance the Rapper. These experiences, combined with time spent living at a meditation centre and working as a fire lookout, shaped the band’s reflective yet adventurous spirit.
Following their second EP Be Lucky, Orchid Orchestra is now recording its debut full-length album, supported by a CreativeBC grant and SOCAN’s highly selective TD Incubator for Creative Entrepreneurship. Their live shows combine heartfelt songwriting with immersive, high-energy arrangements that bridge organic and electronic worlds.
medium bio
Orchid Orchestra is a Vancouver-based indie pop band known for blending choral harmonies, hip-hop grooves, and theatrical storytelling into emotionally resonant songs that explore vulnerability, joy, and the search for meaning. Led by Rupert Hudson—an artist, therapist, and long-time industry insider—the band creates music that doesn’t just sound good, it feels necessary.
Rupert’s journey includes time working at Capitol Records, managing artists in New York, and touring with members of Chance the Rapper’s team, before stepping away from the industry for a two-year stay at a meditation centre in rural B.C. That period of deep reflection reshaped his approach to music and life, and inspired a new ethos: radical honesty, emotional courage, and artistic authenticity.
Since forming out of Vancouver’s Chorus Studio, Orchid Orchestra has played festivals, headlined venues like The Biltmore, and most recently performed at Root Dwellers, where they invited climate activist Seth Klein (Climate Emergency Unit) to speak before their set. Their second EP Be Lucky is a heartfelt exploration of grief, hope, and human connection, with standout single “Nothing” earning praise for its danceable energy and lyrical depth. Their sound lands somewhere between The National, Talking Heads, and a healing group therapy session.
Through their music, live shows, and Rupert’s mental health advocacy, Orchid Orchestra is becoming a voice for those navigating modern life with sensitivity and soul.
long bio
Orchid Orchestra is a Vancouver-based indie pop band blending hip-hop, choral harmonies, and theatrical storytelling into a sound that is both bold and deeply vulnerable. Their music is an invitation—to feel deeply, to embrace self-reflection, and to find connection in a world that often feels fragmented.
Fronted by Rupert Hudson, whose journey spans England, Calgary, and South Carolina, Orchid Orchestra’s music reflects a life shaped by movement, introspection, and an ever-evolving creative vision. After years in the industry—including touring alongside Chance The Rapper’s camp—Rupert stepped away from the chaos to spend two years living and working at a Vipassana Meditation Centre, followed by a summer as a fire lookout in Northern Alberta. The solitude reshaped his relationship with music, reinforcing his belief in its power to heal, transform, and unite.
Upon returning, he formed Orchid Orchestra at Vancouver’s Chorus Studio, a creative hub rooted in community and collaboration. The band quickly became a fixture in the local scene, performing at festivals, earning press features in The Vancouver Sun, and headlining iconic venues like The Biltmore. Their second EP, Be Lucky, showcases their expansive and dynamic sound, with the standout single “Nothing” offering a perfect synthesis of their influences—groove-driven rhythms, layered harmonies, and introspective lyricism.
Orchid Orchestra’s music resonates with those who seek depth in sound and meaning, drawing in fans who value mental health awareness, activism, and emotional connection. With each song and performance, they create a safe space for expression, proving that music is more than entertainment—it’s a shared experience of vulnerability and hope.
